Why Diesel Injector Diagnosis Matters
Modern common-rail diesel engines operate at injection pressures exceeding 2,000 bar. Even a 1% deviation in injector delivery volume causes noticeable performance loss and increased emissions. Catching issues early prevents costly engine damage.
Symptoms of Failing Injectors
- Rough idle or excessive vibration
- White or black smoke from the exhaust
- Reduced power under load
- Increased fuel consumption
- Hard starting, especially when cold
Tools Required
You need a diagnostic scanner that supports injector coding and live actuator testing. Basic OBD2 readers won't cut it here — you need a tool with diesel-specific coverage.
Recommended capabilities:
- Live fuel rail pressure reading
- Injector balance test (cylinder contribution)
- Injector return flow measurement
- Coding/calibration after replacement
The Cylinder Balance Test
This is your first step. The scanner commands each injector to fire while the others are disabled, then measures the drop in RPM for each cylinder.
Healthy result: Each cylinder causes roughly the same RPM drop (±30 RPM).
Failing injector: One cylinder shows significantly less drop, meaning it's delivering less fuel.
Cylinder 1: −85 RPM ✓
Cylinder 2: −82 RPM ✓
Cylinder 3: −31 RPM ✗ ← suspect injector
Cylinder 4: −88 RPM ✓
